The answer
SHANK
What shank means
The part of the leg between the knee and the ankle, or the shaft of a tool or weapon that connects the handle to the working end.
Where the word comes from
From Old English *scanca*, meaning the leg or shin bone. Related to Old Norse *skankr* and Old High German *scanca*, all descended from Proto-Germanic *skankōn-*. The word originally referred to the lower leg, then extended to mean the shaft of a tool or the part of a shoe covering the instep. Its use in golf (hitting with the club's shaft rather than the sweet spot) and as slang for a homemade knife developed much later.
