Wordle Statistics: Every Answer Since 2022, Analysed

Most Wordle statistics you’ll find online are computed from the dictionary — the list of words that could be answers. These are computed from the words that actually were. We keep a copy of every puzzle the New York Times has published, and this page recounts the whole archive every day.

Covering February 1, 2022 through September 3, 2026. Today’s puzzle is deliberately excluded — this page never spoils the current answer.

Has Wordle ever repeated an answer?

The common wisdom is no — that once a word has been the answer, it is retired for good. Across 1,675 puzzles that is very nearly true, but not quite. 3 answers have appeared twice. Every repeat below was re-checked against the New York Times’ own puzzle endpoint before publishing, because a claim like this is worth nothing if it turns out to be a bug in our archive.

Which letter does Wordle start with most?

S, and it is not close. 254 of 1,675 answers open with S — 15.2% of every puzzle ever published, and roughly 1.7× the next most common opener. If you are ever down to a coin flip on the first letter, S is the bet.

And which letter does it end with?

E, followed by Y. Between them they close 34% of all answers. That lopsidedness is the single most useful thing on this page: a fifth-position E or Y is far more likely than the alphabet suggests, which is why openers ending in E perform so well in our starting-word rankings.

Letter frequency across every answer

Every letter slot in every answer, counted. The shape roughly tracks written English, with one practical difference: Wordle answers are ordinary five-letter words, so the long tail (J, Q, X, Z) is thinner than general text.

The five rarest letters to actually appear: j (19), q (26), x (28), z (32), v (118).

How many vowels does a Wordle answer have?

Two, almost always. The distribution is tight enough to plan around: after your opener, if you have found two vowels you have probably found them all.

The vowel-free answers — all 6 of them, each leaning on Y as the stand-in vowel: nymph, tryst, glyph, shyly, crypt, myrrh. Days like these are why a vowel-heavy opener such as ADIEU can leave you with five gray tiles and no information.

How often do letters repeat?

Roughly one answer in three — 519 of 1,675 (31.0%) — contains the same letter twice. Repeated consonants specifically account for 17.8%. This is the single most common way a solve goes wrong: players eliminate a letter mentally once they have placed it, then never consider that it might appear again. Words like the hardest answers on record are overwhelmingly double-letter words.

Methodology, and how often this changes

Every figure is computed from our own archive of published answers, sourced daily from the New York Times’ public Wordle endpoint — the same one the game itself uses. The archive currently holds 1,675puzzles. Today’s answer is excluded from every count on this page so that reading it can never spoil the puzzle you are still playing.

These numbers are now effectively stable. With an archive this size, one new puzzle can shift any percentage here by at most 0.06 percentage points, and only if it lands in the same bucket every day. Moving a headline figure by a full point would take about 20 consecutive puzzles all breaking the same way — which is why we recompute daily and expect to see nothing move.
